China sells arms, including ammunition, tanks and helicopters, to Sudan and it also buys most of its oil. We believe it’s likely these arms are being used to commit serious human rights abuses within Sudan.
Over 200,000 people have been killed and more than two million have fled their homes in a five-year long conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region. Pro-government Arab militias are accused of a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the region’s black African population.
The principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of another country must not be an excuse to remain silent in the face of violations. Economic profits for China should not be built on the killings and displacement of Africans.
