Stand up and be counted
21 July 2008

Amnesty International Australia and the team behind the new movie Salute have released the third and final teaser about human rights and the Beijing Olympics.
China's leaders promised the Olympics would bring human rights improvements, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it expects human rights to get better as a result of Beijing hosting the Games.
Yes, there have been some positive changes, but these have been overshadowed by increased repression of groups that authorities fear may embarrass or disrupt the country.
In China the freedom of speech and freedom of expression are undermined. Authorities execute more people than any other country in the world, they jail people who peacefully speak up for human rights, they heavily censor the Internet and media, and repress ethnic minorities and not-sanctioned religious groups.
Have a look at the first and second teasers.
Human rights are not political, and standing up for human rights is standing up for the values enshrined in the Olympic Charter.
